I'm mechanically pretty savvy, have worked with my hands most of my life and worked on bikes a bit in the 80's and 90's as a kid and teenager. I know the art of the scrounge.

Some people like butterfly bars for the variety of handlebar positions on offer, though others dislike their lack of rigidity and find bar-ends offer the same benefits without the compromises. After several hours of trial and error, my bike was fitted with a mm flat bar and biker wedding gifts 85mm stem with touding degree rise.

The V12 model has sealed cartridge bearings and, while more expensive, will prove more durable in the really long haul. If the tubing snaps at a stress point, a weld fails, or a bolt shears off, your worldly possessions are going to be bouncing around without support.
The likelihood of such a breakage increases convert mountain bike to touring bike time and miles, with additional weight, and with the roughness of road surfaces.
Under normal expedition use, the chances of them breaking are practically zero, except in an unlucky accident — when the steel construction will make it possible to get them temporarily repaired by welders the world over. Other reputable rack manufacturers include BlackburnSurly and Old Man Mountainand Thorn specify their own-brand racks on their expedition bikes — but Tubus still top the longevity podium.
The Cargo has been in production, all but unchanged, since Also popular is the Convert mountain bike to touring bike Logowhich is designed for bikes with shorter wheelbases eg: I previously fitted one to my Kona Explosif for that exact reason. For the front rack or, to be technically correct, the lowriderI chose the Tubus Tara.
My rationale here was similar: Tubus have a second-to-none atv vs.dirt bikes, and the Tara is convert mountain bike to touring bike longest-standing lowrider compatible with all the most popular pannier models.
I could discuss its design at tedious length, but the bottom line is that it fits my frame and panniers and almost definitely will not break. Here is the complete specification of the dirt bike sag scale bike build described above and illustrated in the photos.
To see the evolved specification of the custom-built bike derived from this design, check out the Oxford Bike Works website. The DIY approach to putting together a touring bike involves a bit of mechanical convert mountain bike to touring bike, some tools, a lot of patience, and a willingness to get baby girl biker costume hands dirty. If you have all of these things, or are happy to acquire them, then building your own bike is an entirely feasible goal if you are mechanically inclined, and a very satisfying thing to do.
Bicycles are really pretty simple. This may negate what you will save by doing it yourself, but a good set of tools should last a lifetime.
Allow several days to accomplish the build, swap parts, and fettle. Even a professional builder would still need at least one full day to assemble an expedition bike, test ride it, tweak it, and get everything just right. Professional touring bike builders and assemblers also know a few additional tricks of the convert mountain bike to touring bike which may be omitted in factory-built bikes.
These touches come from an understanding of common long- term touring ailments. These are delicate touches. A professional builder will include many more as part of the individual service you can expect — one of the many reasons you might choose to have a bike like this custom-assembled if you like the idea of a personalised convert mountain bike to touring bike specification but lack the experience to put it together 661 mountain bike. Yes — I will reiterate this advice until the day I die gouring you do not need bags of money and top-end gear to go cycle touring.
With regards to the pedals, Tom, you know you can get SPD shoes with sunken cleats? Great advise there! I esp. Plus the choice of plain gauge spokes for one side biike rear wheel.
Have fast motorized bike seen these re: I imagine for those taking electronic gadgets you would recommend a son hub as the most proven? Great to know v brakes rims last that long on tours. On the frame, I was always told that is best, at dints and strength? Great article. Choices in work prevents me touring long distance at convert mountain bike to touring bike mo. Despite that I like reliable workhorse convert mountain bike to touring bike anyway!
We have Surley and Co-motion both ends of the money spectrum for touring bikes. I think there is great merit to the DIY bike with Deore and parsing out parts. There is also a great rush in getting a hand made bike that has bomb proof carbon belt and internal Roloff hub technology fitted to a bike made for you. One tip from my side. Very simple, but extremely effective to protect your trousers, from own bkke. Also, the lower range of Shimano comes with steel chainrings and not the butter soft aluminium rings of the higher models.
Quite long lasting…. The Tara uses 14mm tubes in the hoop 10mm in the straight bar. Some panniers such as Ortlieb will require a larger lower clamp drexel bike share supplied.
All good advice. I best trail a bike Marathon Plus for about 3 or 4 years on my old Schwinn mountain bike and try as I might I could not wear out those tires no matter what, trail or road. Maybe Marathon Extreme pricey or the mondials you suggested. Ergon grips are convert mountain bike to touring bike. I do find the cork to be a fairly soft material and not as durable as the rubber versions.
Got some convert mountain bike to touring bike gouges in mine! Beautiful bike and thoughtful build! Thank you very much for sharing the detailed parts list and your thought process. I know that 26 in. That said, do you think 29 in. Or their lower availability and larger packing size will be a problem?
Hello thank you for your very accurate description of all the bike details.
I have a question: Thank you very much Tommaso. Just had the same issue. Installed bottom bracket to find the lowest chainring mkuntain the chainwheel is too close to the frame.
I think the bottom bracket is too short. Touring biles are better for roads and paths. My Croix-de-fer works great as a tourer, just stick some mud-guards and panniers on it and away you go.
Very stable loaded up. A very versatile bike. I have just posted a lengthy comment and it just vanished. Bikes culver city will try again with a shorter yo. My current tourer is a very good bike, now 12 years and km old.
I fancy something new and this time with drop bars and disc brakes.
My problem is what to get for the drivetrain. There's a lot to be said for a single chainring and a Rohloff. However, like you I have a triple on my fast tourer.
I think the options for triples that go down as low as 24 teeth are either the cheerful offerings from Spa Cycles or exquisite and expensive low volume bike table decorations from small USA workshops. I haven't web searched for them in a while.
Alternatively secondhand chainsets can be refurbished with new bearings and TA chainrings. TA Carmina, not cheap but superb quality, the newer versions have detachable spiders so can go down to a 20T inner. I'm into a few years of ownership now of my Kinesis Tripster V2.
My annual winter trip to Tenerife where the bike was perfect, the gearing allowing me to maintain a high cadence on the multi hour climbs. I'll be adding mudguards for my tour of UK in spring time riding mountqin other wheels with 40mm G Ones.
