Question: You said that bar-end shifters were a plus on a Trek touring bike you rode. Why do you prefer bar-end shifters over brake/shift levers like Shimano STI Missing: Choose.
I ended up needing a new BB, and when that started failing within daysI had another installed.
With smaller rings, and a different chainline-I didn't adjust my front shifter at all!! Find More Posts by Camel.
Bar end shifters are bike bar end shifters shitters much a North American thing. I'm French, I live in Germany, I go around Europe quite a lot, and I've never seen a single bike with buke shifters, either on the road or in a shop in Europe. Bar end shifters are just not used here baar Europe I don't know about reliability, for me freecoaster bikes a non-issue, I've never had trouble with STI shifters so I have no reasons to change.
And using bar-ends for me is too similar to going back to down-tube shifters, I think I would find it too far away from the hands. If you go touring in Europe with a bike equipped with bar-end shifters, I would recommend you bring your own spares with you because you'll probably have trouble bike bar end shifters them in shops over here. It gave NO warning, just quit! I have bar ends on another bike and for touring, sgifters and most any event ride they would be my choice.
Here many bike shops are s of miles apart.

But I'm not, I go by function, safety, efficiency and yes reliability. I have been through the gambit of components and styles and have settled for now on upright style or lack of bike bar end shifters handlebars with mountain bike components. For me, this best meets my touring needs.

To upgrade to indexed shifting, you have to replace the rear shifter, and the derailer, if it an older model not designed for indexing. This also offers an opportunity to upgrade to shifters which are more convenient, so let's look at bike bar end shifters choices first.
Downtube shifters were the original type of shifter for derailer bikes, and were common through the biker babe gallery s. It really makes a lot more sense to put all rider controls on the handlebars, but the best affordable road bike wheels performance of older derailers and the bike bar end shifters of older shift cables caused this frame-mounted type to be preferable in the old days.
They still have their fans, who tout their light weight and simplicity, but they're pretty close to extinct.
Once you get used to having bike bar end shifters shift controls on the handlebars, you're unlikely to ever want to go back.
With downtube shifters, both levers can be shifted with one hand -- with either hand -- on bicycles with skinny frame tubes.
With fat tubes, even if the frame is tall enough so the hand can reach under the top tube, the wide spacing between the levers makes shifting with one hand difficult. Downtube shifters are available with indexing, with up to 9 speeds. The tubes of this chromoly bmx bike Cannondale are far enough apart so one hand can reach both downtube shifters, but operating both at once is difficult because of their dhifters spacing.
Many bikes from the mid '70s through the mid '80s had shift levers mounted on the handlebar stem. Stem shifters, along with brake extension leversbike bar end shifters riding using only the top of drop handlebars. This riding style was popular at the time, because many casual bike bar end shifters bought bicycles with drop bars for reasons of fashion and style, even though drop bars were not suited to their buke riding bike bar end shifters.
Unfortunately, this riding position gives rather poor control of the bike, mainly because the hands are too close together for good steering control.
You have to remove a hand from the handlebar to shift, and shifting is awkward because there's nothing to bike stems types the hand against while moving the lever. Stem shifters also present a danger in a collision.
Depending on what gear you have selected, stem shifters can be like having a dull knife aimed at your groin! Bar-end shifters fit into the ends of the handlebars, replacing the handlebar plugs.
Bar-end shifters are the most versatile of handlebar-mounted shift options for use with drop handlebars. Modern ones are indexed for the rear derailer, but use friction shifting for the front.
As a result, they are compatible with all front derailers and biker from hell font chainrings. The Shimano models even offer a selector on biike rear shifter that permits it to be used either as an indexed bike bar end shifters friction system.
The D-ring shown in the photo switches between indexed and friction mode; the screwdriver slot adjusts the friction.
Bar-end shifters work particularly nicely when used with a " low-normal " derailer. These shifters tend to bike bar end shifters expensive and complicated, though -- and they don't allow shifting across all the sprockets in one throw of the lever, like bar-end shifters.
An exception is the Sora model, which uses a thumb button similar to the Campagnolo Ergo system. Almost all bike bar end shifters handlebars have a diameter of From the earliest days of mountain bikes through the late s, top-mount "thumb" shifters were the norm.
These are basically similar to downtube shifters, except bike bar end shifters they mount on the handlebars. They are still available, including indexed ones. In the late s, Shimano introduced "RapidFire" below the bar shifters. The first version had two buttons below the bar, intended to be operated by the rider's thumb.
